Why Check Coolant Levels?
Coolant or antifreeze prevents overheating and freezing of the engine’s cooling system. Like brake fluid, recommended service intervals vary by manufacturer and can range from roughly a few years to a recommended coolant check during every scheduled maintenance service.
Coolant contains chemicals that prevent corrosion damage inside the engine. Checking the level of coolant is important because it can help prevent your engine from overheating and your car from breaking down. Keep an eye on your coolant level to ensure there aren’t any leaks. If you ever see the engine temperature warning light turn on, there might be something wrong with your coolant or the amount of coolant remaining.
How to Check your Coolant Level:
Firstly, make sure your car engine has cooled down completely. Do not check the coolant level if your car is still hot.
Radiator Cap:
- Park on a flat surface, let your vehicle cool down, and pop the hood.
- Find the radiator cap. Be sure it is cooled down. Twist it off
- Examine to see that there is coolant. If yes, the system is full. If not you will need to consult your manufacturer for the necessary coolant for your vehicle and follow steps to replacing your coolant.
